Ian and I have been enjoying a wonderful off season of no weddings, locked in our edit cave editing feature films, and spending time with family and our pups.  But there’s one thing about the off season that we don’t enjoy and that’s the absence of blogging and putting our couple’s films up on the blog.  Ian and I were trying to figure out how we could continue posting in the off season that would offer something to our brides and grooms, future engaged couples, and really anyone who likes to read about wedding related topics.  We talked about how much we loved our (now married) couples and wish we could involve them in more beyond their wedding day.  That’s when thought we’d love to create a community where our previous couples could offer advice to future brides.  So many brides (myself included) have things we learned after the wedding.  Things we loved about our wedding day, things we would change, things we didn’t even think of.  And we want to pass along that wisdom to others.  That’s when we thought, “Why not have our past brides share this advice online on our blog?”  And that’s how our “Reflections” post came to be.

Our first guest blogger is my friend Meagan.  Meagan and I go waaaaay back.  We have known each other since our freshman year in college and grew closer over the years as we pursued our degrees in Theatre at Cal State Fullerton.  Since graduating college Meagan has had an awesome career in television and film and I’m constantly impressed by her.  Since graduating we often get together over wine and cheese (or any other delicious food) and connect on all facets of life, including our weddings.  Meagan got married back in 2011.  I was beyond grateful that Meagan said yes when I asked her to be our first Bride Blogger.  Thank you so much Meagan for offering your wisdom to couples who have yet to take that walk down the aisle.

From Holder…
As a former bride planning her wedding filled with checklists, to-do lists, guest lists and registry lists, I can honestly say that in spite of all the planning, anticipation, occasional meltdown and “lists”, my wedding was the best day of my life to date. I asked myself after the wedding was all said and done…”Why?” Why had the day I planned meticulously for 2 years (yea…2 years…) NOT flown by the way I had heard or why in our amazing wedding video were they able to capture so many unexpected moments that I could only have dreamed up? Answer: I let go. The day of, I made an internal pact to myself not to let anything bother me that especially took focus off of why I was able to experience this day in the first place: my groom. Our story. Our families that allowed us to build the story. Our friends who witnessed us live out our story that ultimately led us to this big day. Let it be known, I am not a particularly “go with the flow” person. I love lists; I really love color coordinated lists. I love inspiration books with tabs and corresponding photos behind the subject of those tabs. I love schedules and love printing out said schedules even more. You get the point. “Letting go” isn’t exactly a simple thing for someone like me. But on my wedding day and especially in hindsight, the pay-off of letting go was huge. My biggest advice to brides, whether an especially enthusiastic planner like myself, or someone who flies by the seat of their pants, is to trust whomever you’ve hired for the day (I’m not a fan of the term “vendor”) to carry out any plans, big or small, you’ve made in preparation. What that allows for is a completely enjoyable experience as a guest of a party you happen to be guest of honor at, rather than as the host. How much fun is it to attend a dinner party (or any party) where you don’t have to cook or clean up and simply get to say thank you and goodbye when the party is over? Think of your wedding in the same way. This means, and I strongly encourage, that you set aside some amount of money in your budget to hire a friend or professional to allow you to relax and enjoy the day of. If you’re like me, you had a budget and from that budget you did your best to hire the people you felt would make your day everything you imagined. Trust that. Things will go wrong. For example, my hairstyle was definitely not what I had planned, the table numbers were accidently misprinted by my wonderful husband to be (ha) and the large shuttle bus we hired to transport the wedding party broke down…while we were in it. But, in keeping with my pact of “let go”, none, and I honestly mean none, of these events affected how happy I was to get married to and celebrate with my best friend. The proof will be in the memories both recorded (thank you Couture Motion Pictures!) and in the inner peace you have knowing you fully enjoyed your “big day”. Also, keep in mind that while our wedding day should be the “best day of our lives”, we all have many, many more “best days” to look forward to.
I wish you happy planning and an even happier, peaceful wedding day!
Sincerely,
Meagan

Born worlds apart, they found each other.  Jordan was born in Los Angeles, CA and Tom in Kinglsey, U.K.  But their paths would cross in 2011 in London.  As they walked towards each other and locked eyes they knew in an instant..they had found their soul mate.  Their whirlwind romance brought them here.  To this unbelievable wedding.  This is the kind of wedding that makes Ian and me love our jobs and count our blessings.  Not only was this wedding the most beautiful we have ever seen, but the people behind it all were amazing.  It’s so wonderful to work with friends/colleagues like Heather Kincaid and the ladies at JOWY Productions.  And we can’t say enough about Jordan and Tom.  They are our dream clients.  Authentic.  Hilarious.  Emotional.  Beautiful.  Vulnerable.

Matt & Hollie have known each other for nearly 20 years.  Their first meeting was a memorable one, in kindergarten.  That’s right, they first laid eyes on each other in kindergarten.  Matt knew she was something special so he offered her his gushers at lunch, which Hollie refused to accept.  So how does a 5 year old boy in love react to that?  Matt took the class picture and drew horns over Hollie’s face and wrote “looser” under her name.  Not exactly M+H=Love.  They continued to go to the same grade school, middle school, and even high school.  As college came they went their separate ways and lost touch.  But Matt never forgot her.  After much determination of finding her again, Matt again followed the path of the typical (modern) romance and tracked her down on Facebook to Biola University in LA.  Not wanting to loose her again, he sent her a message and made up an accuse to be “in the neighborhood.”  He said the reason he was there was for a surfing trip in Orange County, false.  And that he had to be there for at least a day, false.  He just really wanted to see her again.  With the intention of only being there for a day he didn’t leave for 4 days.  Hollie even wondered if this guy was ever going home!  On the last day Hollie went clubbing with her roommates for a birthday celebration and Matt came along.   It was that fateful night that they would have their first kiss.  That 4 days sealed the deal and they have been in love every since.

On a personal note, I didn’t realize that when Matt, who is my youngest cousin, drew over this poor girl’s face in kindergarten that he would meet his wife.  Matt I have seen you grow into such a fantastic and caring man.  Hollie has got to be one of the sweetest people I have ever met and you two are the perfect match for each other.  She is so beautiful, inside and out.  I don’t know if I have met another person with a heart as kind and sweet as hers.  She is such a great addition to our crazy family.

In our opinion, Jessica & Steven have a true Hollywood romantic comedy romance.  They are like Kate Beckinsale and John Cusack in Serendipity, creating a relationship in an impossible situation.  It was truly meant to be.  Steven was on holiday in Vegas when he walked into a club and locked eyes with a beautiful brunette across the room.  With one wave of her arm, their lives were never the same.  Steven turned down a job in Abu Dhabi and moved to another continent to be with Jessica.  It was no wonder that they couldn’t stop holding each other on the wedding day.  Congrats Jessica & Steven…your love is truly serendipitous and we hope that you enjoy your happily ever after.

Imagine this perfect little pocket of Idaho, a mix of sunshine and rain, around 30 family and friends, and the most amazing food you have ever tasted.  That was the setting for Wes & Kimi’s wedding.   Lynn Canyon Ranch is located in Victor, ID which is very close to Jackson Hole, WY.  The entire guest list traveled for this destination, ranch wedding.  on the morning of the wedding we were very worried about the weather.  The sky looked like it was about to open up and flood the sky.  In fact, when we first drove up to the venue hail was scattered on the ranch grounds.  But Mother Nature did not let us down.  Minutes before the wedding started, the sun graced us with its presence.  The sun kissed our skin for the entire ceremony in the amazing aspen grove, family portraits, and a few portraits with Kimi & Wes.  As we shot the final photo the thunder, lighting, and rain chased us indoors.   Kimi & Wes really wanted to give their guests a wonderful meal…and boy they did.  Ian and I have had some amazing meals, but this was hands down the best filet and lamb we have ever had.  We now dream of going back to Linn Canyon Ranch to eat the food again.  You might wonder where the photo is of said food….I didn’t do it.  I was that amazed with the food that I didn’t even think about snapping a photo.  Now that I have made myself hungry thinking about the food, I will leave you with the wonderful images from this day.

Weddings can be a lot of things.  They can focus on the details, the party, the extravagance, or the experience.  But one thing that all weddings have in common is that they are all ultimately about two people coming together.  On the day of Chris and Serein’s wedding I didn’t notice it, but looking back over their footage and editing their film, what I saw was two people who were already together.  When they are holding one another and looking each other in the eye, it’s as if the world around them disappears.  They have an unbreakable bond that we should all be so lucky to have.  We, as artists, have always believed that the details of the wedding do not matter near as much as the love that is experienced on the wedding day.  No matter what the day looks like, or what goes right (or wrong), as long as love is the reason, the wedding day will be perfect.  Watch this film and tell me this day wasn’t perfect.

Giggles.  That’s the noun I would use to describe Sean & Dawn’s wedding day.  It was full of giggles.  And the giggles came from every direction.  Everyone was just so giddy for Sean & Dawn.  Every single person there was just elated for them.  It was so nice to giggle with them again at the Green Gables Estate after their Balboa Park engagement session earlier in the year.  We absolutely loved filming and photographing them on their wedding day (a huge thanks to Ginnie of Roots Photography for second shooting with us!).  I am going to go out on a limb and say that Dawn has never looked more beautiful than she did on this day.  Drop.  Dead.  Gorgeous.  And Sean did not disappoint in his awesome bow tie completed with his ear to ear day long grin.  We are still so so happy for these two!!

Jason & Janelle first contacted us a year and a half ago, just days after they got engaged.  We were so thrilled they wanted to work with us because they were a laid back, creative, awesome couple.  We couldn’t wait to start filming their story.  It started with them coming to Bakersfield to film their Save the Date, which you might remember watching.  It was a blast to collaborate on such a fun film and great to hear that their guests enjoyed their inventive way to announce their wedding.  Then we went on a road trip up to Sequoia Valley to film their Love Story.  We went ice skating with them (which Megan enjoyed), we went snowboarding with them (which Ian enjoyed), and we played with their fantastic dog Shortee in the snow (which we all enjoyed).  They showed this film at their reception, sharing their story with everyone.  At this point we had spent several days with Jason & Janelle, and when their wedding day rolled around in Clarksburg, it was like watching our friends get married.  Our friends who we have traveled all over California with.  We were overjoyed to see these two people get hitched at the ridiculously cool venue at the Old Sugar Mill.  And as a huge bonus we got to work with photographer and friend Scott Andrew for the third time.  So happy for you Jason & Janelle!  When we are in northern California next we will hit up the slopes (not Megan), do some ice skating (not Ian), and throw back some courage juice (all of us)!

Misty & Greg are very humble and down to earth.  Their love resonates deeply and profoundly.  We have been in this business long enough to know that there are different types of people, relationships, and love.  Despite this very austere facade, their wedding was a flourish of DIY and vintage charm.  Misty had a vision for the design and feel of her wedding, and she went all out in achieving that look.  They little details abounded and reflected the care that she put into the wedding.  She had dozens of little DIY charms and a lot of vintage pieces spread throughout the venue.  Misty really turned the blank slate into Pinterest magic.  To Greg’s credit, he was there to help support Misty and her vision, which I’m sure every guy out there can attest to, that is a full time job in and of itself.  The work that Misty put into the look and feel of the wedding was reflected in the experience of the day as well.  These two really remind us what commitment really means, and the depth of the decision to give ones life over to another.  It was a beautiful day because it was a beautiful couple.
